Why this sport?
He began skiing for the British Army after an officer noticed him taking part in biathlons and triathlons. After sustaining the injury to his left arm, he taught himself how to adapt to his impairment so he could ski again.

He was in the British Army for a total of 23 years. He joined up at age 16, and continued to serve in the military after sustaining the impairment to his left arm at age 22. "My attitude was resolutely that this would not beat me. I showed the Army I was still employable and I avoided medical discharge. I took on jobs I could do and did them to the best of my ability."
