Why this sport?
He was initially unwilling to get into wheelchair sports because he felt it was a 'stereotypical move' for people who have recently acquired an impairment. However his outlook changed after a chance meeting with US hand-cyclist Kyle Massey, who convinced him to start competing in triathlons.

He has competed in para-triathlon at international level. He won bronze in the PT1 event at the 2015 Yokohama World Event in Japan. (triathlon.org, 2016)
Impairment
In 2000 he collapsed during a beach training exercise to become a navy diver. The next day, he passed out while riding a motorbike. Fluid had formed inside his spinal cord, resulting in quadriplegia. Doctors were unable to establish a cause for his paralysis. (theage.com.au, 07 Nov 2009)
