When and where did you begin this sport?
He began swimming competitively at age 12, having developed his skills at primary school swimming lessons. He initially took part in local tournaments and was then spotted by a talent scout from the Paralympics New Zealand swimming squad.
Why this sport?
His family encouraged him to give the sport a try. He spent much of his childhood swimming and playing at the Lido Aquatic Centre in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

ACTIVE YOUTH
As a boy he learned to play the guitar and the piano, and also played rugby as a winger. "I would often get confused looks when I caught the ball like everybody else. I was raised to know that I could do what the other kids do, I have never been treated differently. If I come up against an obstacle that I can't get past in the usual way I try a different way.
