Impairment
A hereditary multiple osteochondromatosis operation resulted in the amputation of her left leg. The youngest of six siblings, she showed no signs of the disease until age 11 when abnormal growth of bones in her left leg began to appear. Her brother David, father, grandmother and great-grandmother presented similar conditions, but not as severe as her. An operation was required to correct the problem, but resulted in an infection and amputation of the leg was then necessary. "My world collapsed, I was very upset and fell into a deep depression. At 12 years old everything is beautiful and life should be happy," she said. For a year she quit school and did not leave her home, until she was convinced to try rehabilitative swimming.
