In 1977 at age 21 he was a passenger in a car travelling back from a friend's wedding to his coast guard base in Oregon, United States. The driver of the car lost control and struck a diesel truck that was travelling in the opposite direction. "When I woke up in an army hospital, I was in a plastic bubble and couldn't breathe. The doctors told me my body had jack-knifed, with my head landing outside the windshield and my torso and legs twisted inside."
