LIFETIME BAN OVERTURNED
He served a two-year ban after testing positive for the steroid nandrolone at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, where he was stripped of his gold medal. At the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens he returned an adverse analytical finding for Stanozolol metabolites, also a steroid, and was banned for life by the International Paralympic Committee [IPC] for his second anti-doping rule violation. The IPC overturned the lifetime ban in November 2013 after his wife, who also competed in Athens in 2004, admitted in a Baku court of law that she had spiked his drink in the Athens Paralympic Village as a form of punishment following the pair's separation in 2003. He was eventually able to return to competition in 2014. (azerisport.com, 08 Nov 2013; paralympic.org, 08 Nov 2013; 1news.az, 24 Feb 2014)
