He began playing sitting volleyball in 2004 in Berlin, Germany.
Why this sport?
Before his illness he played basketball. After his operation he initially took up archery. However, he missed the action of ball sports so he moved on to sitting volleyball.

He received the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt [Silver Laurel Leaf] in Germany in recognition of his bronze medal at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. (saar-report.de, 07 Nov 2012)
Impairment
His right leg was amputated above the knee after he was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2002. He underwent rotationplasty surgery, involving the ankle joint being rotated 180 degrees and reattached to the leg to form a knee joint.
