In 2006 she fractured her tibia in a snowboarding accident. In 2009, after 14 operations, she was diagnosed with a bone infection in her ankle joint and had to have her leg amputated below the knee. "At the time I was a firefighter. I'd had so much pain for the three years before that, I just chose to have it amputated. I said, 'OK, can we amputate today? I need my life back. I can't continue like this'. And I knew with an amputation I could return to work as a full duty firefighter." (summitdaily.com, 13 Apr 2018; gofiregirl.com, 2014; summitdaily.com, 27 Mar 2011)
