She was born with myelomeningocele [MMC], a form of spina bifida where the spinal cord of the fetus fails to close during development. "I was born with an open back. I am very lucky that I can still walk, even if I limp and sway like a little penguin. The ailments have made me incontinent, which means that the bladder and intestines do not function normally. This also limits my diet, and I have had several back and bladder operations. After every operation and with every setback, I had to go to rehab for months, was confined to a wheelchair and had to fight back the lost strength." (1up.news, 10 Dec 2018) |
